The Diviners by Libba Bray is a young adult urban fantasy novel set in New York during the 1920s, which follows the story of Evie, a touch medium, as she tries to solve a series of murders.
The goal of this student project was to design a cover for the book that will get readers interested enough to pick it up off the shelves among all the other options available.
To begin this project I researched the novel and took notes on important symbols and themes that could be referenced throughout the design. I also researched the book’s setting of the 1920’s in New York City, which inspired further research into the Art Deco period, including the style, the architecture, patterns etc.
Given the book’s setting, I wanted to lean into the Art Deco aesthetic of New York City in the ‘20s. I created a custom art deco pattern using an occult all-seeing eye to tie in occult/ fantasy aspects of the novel and hint towards Evie’s (the main character’s) abilities. This pattern is then repeated inside on the title page too. The backdrop of the cover is a dark midnight blue/purple to give it a mysterious edge and again as a nod to the occult. To draw the reader’s eye to the title on the front cover and the description on the back cover, I created golden frames inspired by some of the art deco frames I came across in my research. As for the typography a high contrast art deco typeface was picked for the title and chapter headers.
